I know how the theory works in practicality, but I don't know things like how new features are created with no precedent, or why multiple generations come up with identical new genes. I was never taught Evolution in school, thanks to the good 'ol academics of Florida. That's sad.

It is not that we share a common ancestor simply because there are genetic similarities, but that the genetic similarities, differences and the pattern that emerges when studying this is in such a way that only universal common descent can explain this.
