Good question.  Do specifics about events really matter?  Religion is a business, not a history class.  Churches, Mosques, Synagogues and Temples want members and their money. The conflict is less about whose morals are best than a simple Walmart versus Target competition.   If God existed then this nonsense and violence would not. Therefore, when something threatens their carefully built up reality (aka, someone with a differing opinion of the concept of god), more likely than not they will vehemently and potentially violently defend their own views. It's a defensive mechanism; protection against all those scary things they've managed to shut out via their religious beliefs. I'm not saying everyone is like that; just some.
