Well there are a lot of people trying to get the drinking age lowered because they say that minors binge drink too much and if they could buy and drink legally they wouldn't have too.
I agree with this. Minors binge drink because it is something they can't have all the time. They drink more because they don't know the next time they will get to drink. Same as if you go to a nice restaurant you eat all of your food because you don't know the next time you will get to go.

MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is battling this. They say that it will just make more kids get in cars and kill themselves or others.
That is complete bullshit. If it was legal, kids wouldn't have to sneak and drive back home drunk because it would be legal for them to stay at the party and spend the night. And if the cops came they wouldn't have to run to their cars and drive away paranoid. They could just turn down the music and continue to enjoy they fiesta.

If the drinking age was lowered than kids would start drinking when they still lived with their parents and somewhat have a guide to teach them about alcohol, kinda like when you get your driving permit. With it at 21 most kids are away and have no one with years and years of experience to teach them safety.

What is proposed now is that if you are 18-20 and you take a 40-hour class on alcohol and drinking safety you can get a licence to buy/consume alcohol.
MADD has said that this wont work. They compare it to the DARE program and how it failed. Well MADD you are retarded. The DARE program was not anything like the proposed program. They also say I quote.
"A 40-hour alcohol education course to teach 18-20 year-olds to drink responsibly will teach them nothing. In fact, it stands to create a situation in which teens overestimate their ability to handle alcohol. "
This is like saying that in health class when you learn about protection and the hazards of having unprotected sex. But what you get out of it is the mind-set that you can have all the unprotected sex you want and nothing bad will happen.

I think it is in America's best interest to lower the drinking age not only for economical reasons but to give the youth of our nation, who is quit possibly deciding the leader of our country for the next four years a little more respect.

Ok i sat here and read everythin everyone had to say and I have somethin to say as well. Personally i started drinkin at 7 yes7 dont call me a liar im not dumb i can count....anyway. i started drinkin at seven and i was an A and B student up untill recently. i am only sixteen now. If the legal drinking age gets lowered its goin to do one of two things....one, if people accept it and learned any manners and self control from their parents they will be able to handle it. if you can buy ciggarettes at 18 and enlist in the army at 18 why not buy alcohol your gettin it from your older friends anyway. I sure as hell am. well no now i get it from my mother its legal here wit a parent or legal gardian. I dont care for all that " IF your gonna die fer your country at least let me drink," "youll give me a gun at 18 to kill ppl but you wont let me drink...."  shit i hate when ppl say that its soo FUCKIN BIASED. if your gonna drink drink responsibly or dont drink at all, dont drink for attention, dont drink "cuz u can" or what ever be responsible and maybe the country will give you some responsibility

I'd prefer no drinking age, thank you.

Don't give a shit either way, because even tho im not 21, i can still buy liquor at restaurants in lovely NYC. Lowering it to 18 would be a good idea though, i doubt they will ever change it though

if you lower the age it just makes it legal for them to binge drink.

That would be true if the drinking environment was to stay the same but it wouldn't. Most Americans are 18 their senior year, still living with parents. And with parental guidence the kids would be able to learn to drink safely.

What if there parents are alcoholics and abuse it?

Most likely the kids would be fed-up with their parents and not want to drink at all.

I think the US should lower the drinking age to 18.  After all, that's the legal age for most everything else (vote, military, etc.)

Agree

Never going to happen. Reason: Having the drinking age as 21 keeps it out of the hands of highschool age students. Or so saythe government. But actually it really does probably keep it out of the hands of alot of 13-16 year olds. ON that note I am 21 and I say change it.

Fuck McCain.  McCain also thinks that if we would have stayed in Vietnam longer, that we would have won.  This isn't a political candidate debate, though, but I just had to get that in...

I don't understand why MADD is having a tizzy over 1-3 years difference.  It's like saying twenty-one is a magical age that turns on the good decision making mechanism in your brain, or some shit.  Regardless if it's eighteen or twenty-one, people are still going to make poor decisions while under the influence.  It has nothing to do with age, and everything to do with responsibility.

Yeah i agree the age should be brought down to 18. I mean you can buy cigerettes being 18, why not alcohol as well .
I think that less kids will end up getting massively drunk if it was lowered because it won't be like a thing to do as much on weekends b/c now you don't have to wait that long to be able to buy it so it's not like your going to be cool if you bought beer b/c it won't be illegal & stuff at 18.

I personally don't like drinking, never got drunk, & never had beer, only rum & like mixed vodka but I think kids my age abuse it too much just b/c of the fact they have to wait to be 21 & want to show off as well or w.e.

But i could care less if they lower it though, it just sucks that most clubs you have to be 21 & over just b/c they serve alcohol so it's like damn, atleast let it be 18 to enter, only at some places they do that. & then stupid teen nights which are horrible with so many younger people.
