| Your life can end at any minute so it only makes sense you would want to enjoy every experience life has to offer. As for abusing substances, moderation is key or else you will end up like another dead beat statistic. If you choose to do this during college then yes, being ignorant on the matter will only make things worse. Just know that doing drugs, does NOT = fun, it's how you use them and if you choose to respect them or not. They can be great or they can end your life. |

Drinking is stupid and a waste of life and time.
I'm going to have to disagree with this. Just because you personally don't like drinking does not mean it is a "waste of life". There are plenty of ways to use alcohol responsibly, that do not interfere with one's life experience whatsoever. I'll be honest. Most of the friends I made in college last year I met at parties where there was drinking. Did that make them any less of friends? No way. Whether you like it or not, alcohol use is a staple in American culture. It's a drug a lot of people use to relax a little on the weekends, and have fun with friends. I do not consider that waste of life or time at all. I'm not saying that you must drink in order to get the full college experience or to have a good time. I completely agree that it''s possible to enjoy college without alcohol. I respect that decision just as much as that of those who decide to drink. I just believe it's important to draw a line between responsible alcohol use, and alcohol abuse. Yeah...if you are getting absolutely hammered all the time, not even remembering what you're doing on the weekends, and making just plain stupid choices; then it probably IS a waste of your life. There should always be more to life than just getting drunk. However, the majority of people do not do this. I have a very hard time understanding how you could consider someone who has a few drinks on the weekends "wasting their life." |

Is it really necessary to drink in order to have fun?
No. But drinking responsibly will avoid people doing anything stupid or endangering their lives. You can drink and not be involved in anything idiotic or cause harm to you or other people. I've been fine drinking at university, because I've controlled myself. Your brother hit his head, because he was drunk. But that's not solely the fault of the alcohol. Your brother drank more than he could handle and that was his fault. |

| Just because you're in college doesn't make it right to get drunk of your ass and act like an idiot. Excessive drinking is NEVER okay. |

No. It's not. As you can tell, it only causes problems--short term and long term. I don't see the fun in being "out of it" and not remembering anything. There's way better things you can do with your life that won't fuck you over in the long run. |

| It is totally possible to not drink and have loads of fun. Alcohol is not necessary for good times. I am terribly sorry about your brother. I hope he is ok. Drinking is stupid and a waste of life and time. |

| Bear in mind that his near-death was a statistical improbability, and that most people who consume copious amounts of alcohol in college are just fine. |
