I'm having a very difficult time getting a job for the summer. I must have applied to a hundred now at least.

There's one thats come up for waiting. Its asking that experience is essential

Could I just add an imaginary cafe to my CV from the last city I lived in and say I worked at it for two years. Waiting can hardly be that complicated a job can it?

I'm getting no where with honesty.

I hope you don't get a job just because you said it ain't a professional job. Any job whether you're the CEO or the cleaner is important in any company. Get off your high horse and thinking you're too good for the job and maybe they'll hire you.

I'm not a big advocate of lying, but what's the downside?  They catch you, fire you and you're out of a job.  How is that any worse than your current situation?  It's not like you're claiming to have technical or medical knowledge, the absence of which could cause problems.

My brother did the same thing with a top end restaurant and he did very well there.

do what i do, have your friend agree to answer his phone on every unknown number "made up cafe" and give you a good reference. thats what me and my friends do:). but we're like pro's at it. especially me. i called my old boss to see if he was giving me bad references had my friend talk and say his name was blah and that he was calling from 4 brothers pizzaria in such city and reviewing an application for employment...etc etc...
but, if you get caught you'll get fired on the spot. and, could possible have penal charges brought up against you for certain jobs...

Considering that you can get fired on the spot if it's found out, it doesn't really seem like a good option. Something like an entire job is pretty easy to verify.

yeah, but would they verify it. And getting fired on the spot at least means you get a job.

I mean I don't think I'm going to get anything this way. And I make it up, say its been closed down - and its in a different city in a different country.

I'm glad you applied, but do you really think its that bad an idea? Its just waiting, its not a professional job.

even if it's not for a professional job, they generally do check up on your references.

and if you start saying stuff like it's closed down in a different city/country that definitely raises alarm bells too.

anyway even if you do get the job it will be pretty obvious you've never actually held a job as a waiter. it's not that it's incredibly difficult, but there's definitely going to be things they'd expect you to know/handle that you may be clueless about. either way it does you nor the employer any good if they're just wasting their time with you because you lied.

Tbh, I'd rather be unemployed than lie just for a few quick bucks.
vampireonion Posted at 3:31 pm on June 15, 2012
No. Just reword things you've actually done to make them sound like jobs. An outright lie can easily be caught but a lie with some truth is harder to detect. So, if you ever helped a buddy out just word it all fancy as a job.

i wouldnt it pretty easy to google places, and to ring the place up and ask.
AttackAttackKat Posted at 3:21 pm on June 15, 2012
i wouldnt do that  because if it comes down to something they want you to do and you dont know how theyll be like wtf  you should because youve done it before.

No... just keep doing what you are doing.

When you hand out resumes how are you doing it? Are you just going in there and handing it to a random person? Or do you ask for the manager?

How do you make an approach with giving out your resume? Do you just drop it off, or do you actually speak with the person at least briefly?

The better you make yourself visible and more open and show that you care for the job, the more likely you will get it.

I've been doing what you'd suggest. Manager, chat, etc.

Have you tried getting friends or someone you know to hook you up?

yes. its soul destroying.

JennyColada Posted at 3:18 pm on June 15, 2012
I pretty often call for references. It's very easy to Google what's on your resume.

I mean, I'm not going to claim that 100% of liars get caught, but if they don't then they certainly do well at faking Facebook pages, Yellowpage listings, and news articles. And it's very unlikely for a business, even a closed one, to not have that (and if they don't then it's probably not a great business, and thus I would really see that as the right quality of "experience" if I were the hiring manager.
