Question One......

I planing on getting my domain and host from different places, but some of the webhost offer a free domain....is it good to take up this offer or is there a catch?

Two....

When i was fooling about with a free web editior it asks from the name of your site. if you type in the name is it taken forever? Can i tranfers what i made on that site two a new webhost?

It's much better to purchase the domain from a separate registrar (preferably one dedicated to domain registration). Less hassle (though you have to configure some stuff manually), less likely to "lose" ownership of the domain if relations with your host sour, etc...

You should be able to transfer all the information from your old site to your new one. After all, web formatting is an open source method. Just view source and copypasta if all else fails.

If you buy a domain and use a free webhost it will keep your name as is.
