If the laptop has a regular monitor port, you could try plugging the laptop into a regular monitor to see if that works. If it doesn't, then it's probably not the display. It could be a problem with the bios or video card, or some other problem like bad memory, a motherboard problem, or if the laptop got really hot, a burnt out processor.
