If the laptop has a regular monitor port, you could try plugging the laptop into a regular monitor to see if that works. If it doesn't, then it's probably not the display. It could be a problem with the bios or video card, or some other problem like bad memory, a motherboard problem, or if the laptop got really hot, a burnt out processor. LCD screens do have a little fluorescent light bulb in them, but I've never seen one burn out suddenly--it's usually a gradual darkening/yellowing over time.

He needs a new display peice, or the light is broken. Just take it to a computer technician.
