Okay, last year I bought a mic for my computer(Not a USB one, it connected through the mic jack) And it would never work. I figured it was a defect or something and never gave it a second thought, never reurned it or anything.

So today I went out and bought a headset with a mic on it. Surprise surprise, the headphones work, but the mic doesn't. Its in the right jack and everything, but every time I try and record, I get nothing. The 'Microphone' thing in the audio settings is NOT on Mute, its turned up all the way or near it, and another settings thing that came up has it checked off next to "Select"

I consulted Labtec's website, and followed its instructions on what to do if the mic isn't working. Didnt fix it..

What the hell is wrong with it? Is the sound card halfly dead, because the speakers work... Please help. I dont feel like hunting for a USB mic(Which I have yet to find) considering I only have one USB port :P

Unfortunately, my computer has the pink jack, but rather than it be for only a mic, its for a mic and speakers apparently, and the only other jack is a line in.

Yeah.. 2 jacks lol.

But I went ahead and bought a USB mic headset. But another question. I bought a 4-port HUB and I tried using my webcam and mic headset at the same time, and it said the limit had exceeded, so only the cam went on. Does that mean I have to get an actual new usb drive that has it's own seperate USB ports?

At some point here you are going to have to realise that it could be all hardware, and that there is nothing more you can do, other than your own solution of trying out a USB one. I tried a hell of a lot with this XP computer to network it with a 95 computer. Online information, finding out that patch is different to crossover, and then finally seeing the physical part inside of it that wasn't working on the 95 computer. You just might not see the problem as easily as I did, despite all my wasted efforts before then. If that is the way it turns out though, I think you can get web-cams that have microphones on them, so it can be quite useful, and there is also the opportunity to buy something to split the USB port into a few more. At some point, maybe even my own computer will need that done.

Above is an image of how things look like, or at least a part of it. According to this page, pink should be the one you put the microphone in. If you can't find that, then your solution could be as annoying as what I had to do to my school computers, and they were the type that kept having to be changed around. I think they were able to do multiple things with each plug. The thing about that case, was that when I plugged the device in it actually had something come up that let you change things around.

Well... if this site doesn't give you a gratifying answer to your problems, you can always try out http://www.techguy.org/

Or just buy a USB mic? lol

Well...

eMachines are known for making cheapo computers, with cheap parts. So I think you're best off buying a new sound card. Just go to like walmart, and you could find one for like 15$. Stick with SoundBlaster,  those are the best IMO.

Didn't work.

And I'm still wondering why the mic and speakers, share the same jack.

I tryed to record voice using sound recorder, hit stop. Plugged in the speakers, then hit play, and just heard static.

Hmmm, I'm not exactly sure, it can be any number of problems.

- Bad sound card.

- Broken jack.

- Bad drivers.

- Or just a simple problem in windows.

First of all, make sure the mic is plugged into the pink jack (if they're all black, then mic, or Line In).
Make sure the 'Line In' 'Mic'  and 'Line Out' (sometimes that may fix the prob) volumes on volume control are all up atleast 1/4 and un-muted.

Make sure the mic is plugged in ALL the way, and is in the pink jack. Then try it out.

If it doesn't work, double check and see if your speakers are working. If they're, then go to 'Control Panel', click on 'Sound and Audio Devices' go to the voice tab, and at 'Voice Recording', make sure that it is set to your default sound card (the same as the one on voice playback.

Then go to the tab next to it, 'Audio', and make sure all of those are set to the same card.

Then try it, and let me know if that works.

I know exactly what the problem is.

Okay this is the most retarded thing I have ever seen.

The Line in Jack will not work witha  mic right?

Well I looked on the back of my comp. Theres 2 jacks. A 'line-in' jack, and a jack that has the Headphones symbol, then a /, then a mic symbol.

So does that mean it handles both? Because I have two plugs, and apparently only one jack. This is fucking ridiculous. What do I do? Ive already tried the mic in the other jack.

Niick Posted at 1:57 pm on Nov. 27, 2006
I plug in the mic, and nothing comes up.

Nothing is supposed to anyway, is it? I mean it's a jack, not a USB port, and nothing popped up when I plugged in the headset, and that works fine.

tait Posted at 1:55 pm on Nov. 27, 2006
does anything come up in device detector?
Niick Posted at 1:52 pm on Nov. 27, 2006
There's no switch. And there's only 2 jacks. One for the speakers, one for the mic. Ive tried reversing them.
tonymaro Posted at 1:49 pm on Nov. 27, 2006
Maybe there's a switch to allow the sound to come through the mic, or plug it in another audio jack. If I didn't help, keep trying to fix the problem.

I went into the sound settings, and went to see if I had to change which driver it was using, but they all only had 1 available, Intel something.

And I have no idea what sound card I had, it came with the comp, and is however old the comp is.

I got the comp in 2003 I believe with XP. It's a 20 gb eMachines.
