My laptop didn't come with word. Is there a way to download it off the internet for free?

You could use a torrent to get office, or borrow a friend's copy.

You can get a trial version from the microsoft site.  It'll work, but only for a month or so.  

I'd say just go for openoffice.org.  If you are just typing basic documents, it's not worth all the money to pay for word.  Open Office is free, and it works pretty well.
