I'm a Windows user thinking about moving over to a MacBook. Can someone tell me what the MacBooks are like - what you think of them? Does it come with anything already installed on it? Give me a crash course in Macs if you can =P

i just got a macbook, one of the newer ones and the OS is so much better than Xp in my opinion (never used vista) plus the sales person at BestBuy (who now sells both Macs and Pc's) said that i would have more trouble using Vista than OS X. OS X is simply beautiful and so easy to use. you will have to get used to certain things (that are very easy to overcome) like no right-clicking and minimizing things is quite different. but it is very nice that you can leave all your programs running in the background. there are so many thing that are just so much better. it is cleaner and things like uninstalling programs (just to name a few) are so easy. to give an example it took me an hour to learn how to uninstall a program when in all actuality all you have to do is delete it...i was to used to living a complicated PC lifestlye. wow i could go on forever, if you have any more specific questions PM me, i will answer all you need.

Here's the basics in my opinion:
If you're a serious gamer, a mac isn't for you
If you're a casual gamer and can survive without digital entertainment, then a macs for you
If you can't stand the constant security updates needed for Windows-A mac's for you
If you believe that Bill Gates is an honest opportunist-then a mac isn't for you =]

i would suggest a laptop where you have xp and linux...
isn't osx a unix based os?
then what is the difference from osx and linux??
i also think they are over priced for the little a person gets

Yeah, OSX is a UNIX based OS, but it is fully proprietary.  Apple owns all the rights to the operating system.  So unlike most linux distros, you're not allowed to change things around in the operating system, or revamp it and redistribute it as your own distro.

That being said, since it is a UNIX based system, you can get plenty of linux things to work on an Apple machine.  As long as you know enough about working through the terminal, you can extract tarballs, and get linux programs working in OSX.  It just takes a bit more effort than most apple users are willing to go through.

And I'll definitely agree about the price problem.  For a few hundred less, I can get a fairly decent PC that will suit my needs just as well.  Apples are kinda cool, but I'm on a student budget, so they're very much out of my range.  Anyways, a few of my friends have mac laptops that I've messed with a few times, and I really don't like them.  Maybe it's just that I grew up with PC's, and I'm more used to them.  But I really didn't see much special in them.

Don't listen to ampamp.

I've been a converted user for nearly three years. Safe to say I'll never go back. It's so much easier to use, and the OS itself rarely ever crashes. There are tons of good free software out for it, it comes with loads aswell. iTunes for Music, iPhoto for organising your photos, Safari for internet, Mail.app for your email, Garageband for creative music making, iMovie for movie making (100x better than windows movie maker, iDVD for DVD creations, iWeb for easy website, and loads more.

It really is fantastic. There's also iChat for AIM and Photobooth for mucking around with your camera =]!

I have a MacBook, and a MacPro. And they are amazing. It comes with iLife which is great for movie and photo editing. And Leopard is quick and responsive.

There is a huge difference between OS X and Unix.

well first, don't waste your money an underpowered, overpriced, poorly supported piece of shit frrom apple, just because of their flashy advertisiing, and all the faggot drones that buy into it.

there's nothing a mac can do, that windows or linux can't do (much) better. just dual-boot windows & some linux distro (like ubuntu), and spare yourself. if you play games, then forget macs.

you can get a much better laptop, with more power, for less money, from just about any respectable manufacturers website, or somewhere like newegg. personally, I got my desktop from avadirect, and I would go for a laptop from there if I ever wanted one.

you can download windows XP so u can play games and u dont have to get all kinds of shit spyware

everytime that my family has had any other computer than a mac, it broke so ya know what, macs are worth it

if you're not some dumb fuck, then you'll never ever get a virus, spyware, or other shit. it's not like viruses don't exist for osx, either. maybe your family just needs a crash course in "how-to-not-fucking-fail-at-the-internet"

actually it was me who broke it
anywho my brother is a fucking genius when it comes to computers, along with his geek of a friend, and my geek of a neighbor so...

Indeed, they are fairly over-priced but their machines are pretty decent.

From a Gentoo user since I was 10(I grew up using it), the only main reason why i'd rather get a Mac than a standard PC is for OSX. Really, their hardware is actually good, I own a Macbook Pro.

Other than the OS itself, I also like the fact that I am too lazy to sit their and find drivers for a PC when I can just reinstall OSX and have it pretty mcuh run off the bat.

I'm not saying they're horrible and I'm not saying they're the best thing in the world, but they're nice systems. Overpriced yes, but worth it, yes. they'll last you a while.
