I want a new cell phone because mine is a piece of shit. Is it possible to just buy a new cell phone without renewing/changing/cancelling my contract and keep the one i have?

Yes, you can. You can purchase an unlocked phone. You can buy it through eBay or I believe you can even purchase an unlocked phone through your service provider. The only way that your contract would be renewed is if you upgrade your phone. However, if you're willing to pay the full price for an unlocked phone, you can easily get a new phone with no strings attached. Keep in mind that purchasing unlocked phones are extremely expensive.

For example, I have recently purchased a new Nokia 5310.  If I were to buy the phone completely unlocked, it would have cost around $289 + applicable taxes.  If I were to upgrade my current phone, it would have only cost me $179.  However, if you purchase the phone with a contract, the cost will be significantly lower because you are signing a pact with the company for a specific period of time.

Yes,  I believe so! As long as you buy your cell phone from your current carrier.

Yeah.  You just have to buy a phone that works with your current plan.  Like you can't have an iPhone if you don't have AT&T, etc.  You just call them and get it activated.
