I am wondering if the average person is able to identify using a Screen Name on AIM WHO's it is...

CAn people use the IP address to figure this out on their own? Or do they need help?

Is there a way to idenfity if it came from more than one screen name? from the same computer?

I wish people would stop saying with the right software, the likes netstat and other standard commands can give you lists of connections your PC is currently holding.

These sorts of commands are available in all the major OS's.

As for being able to track location based on IP, you can track to the local exchange they are plugged into, which in this country is up to about 10 miles from the persons home normally.

To get any more detail you require the ISP's IP leasing records.

Yes, people can get your IP from an AIM chat. Yes, it is traceable and with the right software, they can trace you.

You'd need an IP address tracker or something like that

  they make those???

Oh the sites i could link you that would have you wrapping your pc in bubblewrap.

I am such a techn00b. I totally have no clue about stuff like that. it always amazes me.

But yes, theres an abundance of software and exploits out there that can do literally anything with computer systems / hardware.
I mean even on the friendlier side, people cracking iphones within a week of them being released etc.
Fascinating stuff, hence why i'm going into Software Engineering.

For one if you're engaging in any activity that is seen as a sneaky bit naughty you should be AT LEAST be on a proxy, not that they do anything under any close scrutiny. VPN's with people that are diehard privacy right's defenders (thepiratebay.org are launching a VPN service AFAIK)

But yeah. Ip's can be extremely misleading, don't worry about the typical I'VE GOT YOUR IP, IM GOING TO OWN YOUR PC threats.

honestly, ips cant be tracked to your house, unless the fbi or gov gets involved. second, not many know what to do with an ip address.

If they have the gh0_s-t program than they can
Wolferz Posted at 7:17 pm on July 21, 2008
So someone would actually have to PAY or buy sometihng like that?

Or really know what they're doing with computers?

Like the average person can't, correct?

BabyBlue17 Posted at 7:17 pm on July 21, 2008
It's possible..

I believe AIM messages come from the user's IP address and not the AIM address.

So yes, with the right software, it's very possible.
