Okay, I am really sorry if this is a dumb question. I have never had a laptop before. I am thinking of buying one, so how does the whole internet thing work with a laptop?

You can either connect it up with a wire

or go wireless,

if you are going wireless make sure your laptop has a wireless reciever built in or your have to buy one seperate.

The separate one is sometimes easier (just wait, I have reason to my madness).  Linux does not like many chipsets and it is possible to avoid a lot of headache by just getting a more compatible Cardbus/PCMCIA or USB one.  But, most people who would need to know this already know it.

YOu can set-up wireless router and go from there.  But if you do not mind sitting in one place you can use good old fashioned wiring.

They can use WiFi (wireless internet but you need to have a router) and then there's LAN cables you can use to plug right into it. LAN cables look like phone cords, but slightly wider.

Or if you're one of the dew unlucky ones (I'm really sorry then) who still has dialup connection... just use a phone line to plug it in. It's slightly more complicated to set up but if you have all your information, then you're alright.

Otherwise, LAN cable and WiFi is pretty much "plug and play" style. Kind of anyway...

it may come with a built-in wireless card which can access any unsecured (or secured if you control it) wireless network.

otherwise you just plug in the same cable that you use for your wired internet on your desktop computer.

Most computers have wireless these days. As long as you can get onto the server, you should be fine. Otherwise, you can always plug in an Ethernet cord to your computer. It's no big deal. It's just like a desktop but portable.

Mine just connects because there are public networks around. So I just connect to them and it connects to the internet
