its BASICALLY your history. like for example you log into a website and then the next time you come back to it it remembers your username...something like that

Things that your computer makes to access websites you have visited a bit quicker.  It is also a sort of paper trail to those websites, that is why you delete them if you have been looking at porn and whatnot.
