I've always found VLC to have inferior video playback quality compared with MPlayer personally, especially under linux. Also, the options in VLC are hard to access properly. MPC only works on Windows, but imo it's the best one. Plenty of rendering options and filter options, and all sorted out into the proper places.
MPlayer is excellent for pure keyboard control or "set and forget" options. It's very hard to edit options on it on the fly though, seeing as it's console based. It loads and plays very fast though.
I have never gotten a virus off of limewire/frostwire and I've used it for years.
