I let AVG run every night, do all anti-spyware measures plus a rootkit revealer now and then. Now, one piece of advice, legal or not - if you do download software from torrent sites, never install it right then. AVG usually needs some time (up to three weeks) to get some new virus signatures (usually trojans in illegal keygens).
