at a business you know was barely surviving, would you want the minimum wage to be increased by 20%?

I can't decide. I think if the business was barely surviving, I'd look for a new job. To that end, depending on how easy it would be to find a new job, I would be happy with a 20% pay increase.

Of course you would.

Probably not. I do wonder however, how many businesses realize that some of their minimum wage workers are fundamental to their business and thus to their survival. The questions some businesses may ponder rather than just thinking about minimum wages is what service do they provide and can they really afford the substandard performance minimum wages sometimes elicits. Would it be possible for example to provide more expensive products and services, because its workforce is better paid and thus more willing to provide higher quality service?

I tend to notice that for example stores which set fair prices can still afford to pay their employees better wages and because of this also generate a far happier clientele. An example is Trader Joe's who is certainly far from struggling, has high quality products at a reasonable price and a very devoted clientele which is very happy about the services it receives from obviously happy employees.

It is a fine balance but sometimes I think that businesses which get tied up to the minimum wage habit may shoot themselves in the foot more than help their revenue and their success.

The exception is the restaurant industry which compensates the min wage system with tips and the fast food industry where the cheapes lowest quality food often wins.

Presently, I would not be worried since I'm on the good side of management and put the effort into being the go-to [minimum wage] guy. I wouldn't block it if I could (who doesn't like a free raise), but I would vote against it.
