A one in a billion, billion, billion chance that just happened to occur, being that instead of disappearing pretty much as soon as it created, it rapidly expanded towards omega, causing this wonderfully stable universe. There had to be something there before the big bang, or it couldn't have happened. Scientists know very little about this area though, it's mostly educated guesses, as far as I know.
