That was the opening sentence of the dinner conversation my family had last night. We had relatives over, so they got a nice kick out of it.

It amazes my family that I have as many white friends as I do. I don't think anyone in my family has really been close to white people, you know? We're not racist - well, they aren't racist, that's just the way it happens.

I live in a small rural southern town, and it's not common for many black people to have a ton of white friends. If they do, they are deemed "acting white" or whatever. Some black guys date white girls, but no white guys date black girls (which I still think the equilibrium is a little off on there, but that's another topic). Interracial relationships are still infrequent.

I'm black. I listen to rock aka "white people's music" (although black people created it...). Yes, I know who Giovanni Ribisi and Daniel-Day Lewis are. Yes, I watch "white people" shows (The Office, The OC, etc). Yes, I enjoy a nice indie flick. No, I don't listen to much rap mainstream hip hop is going down the toilet. And yes, I loved Juno.  Yes, I hang out with mostly white people.  Yes, I have always been one of the few black people in my classes since 6th grade.

I mean, that doesn't mean I'm betraying my race. I wish people could see that.

Hahaha, all these kiddies are way too young to remember the Jeffersons. Good times.
whoisabs Posted at 11:47 am on June 29, 2008
Actually, it is your fault for being so culturally uneducated that you'd attempt to name a show from that timeframe instead of naming a show that is either on today, or went off the air not too long ago.

edit: Why not talk about the show Chef instead of Jeffersons?

Who the fuck thinks Rock is 'white people's music' or The Office and The OC as 'white people's shows'?

My family and every black person that I know

they sort of are, seeing as how there are very few black rock musicians, and shows like the office have like, one black character

So? Few black characters doesn't mean the show or music is aimed at white people or only white people are supposed to be appreciating them. That's fucking stupid.

how often do you watch the jeffersons

Considering the fact that the origional dates for the show was 75-85, I doubt that too many folks on LW have seen the Jeffersons.

so it's my fault if the people i'm talking to have culturally uneducated

Culturally uneducated? It's called the show never being shown on TV here. Sorry if I haven't heard of a show that's never been on air in the UK.

Thank you very much, someone else realises this.

Someone will be talking about a band or something like that, and I'll just jump in the conversation, and they're like, "Wait....how do you know about them?"

Because I obviously listen to them just like you do.  This is a big deal because?

It's weird.

When the author and experience and passion is real
Used to feel I should be silent, I was scared to do this song
But I want everyone aware of what is going on
Yes it is jazz and yes it is the blues
And yes it is the exact same way they did rock
But I refuse to watch the same thing happen to hip-hop
I refuse to watch that bullshit...

It kind of is when that black person in the show is depicted as "the black guy"

iI disagree. The role of the black character is irrelevant. It doesn't even matter whether or not there was a black character in the show or not.

A show is a show, and can be watched by whatever person. If they like it they watch it. It's idiotic to think that it is only for white people because of the colour of the cast's skin.

Don't feel bad about it and don't let other closed-minded people think for you. You're just fine the way you are.

Why do people have stereotypes of how people of a certain race have to act? It limits people a lot and makes them doubt themselves.

Back in the day their were TONS of black rock musicians. Many people think that white people did still rock. Just like elvis imitating our oldies/soul and somehow he's regarded as the KING.lol. But I don't really care. Just letting you know this belief is not uncommon at all.
