If they become the majority of the population in that area, they don't need to adapt as they are the dominant culture. By the second or third gen the kids and grandkids usually move on and join the rest of the population. Not necessarily. The new Hispanic influence around here has taken the very few Hispanics that "Adpated" as you claim who were born here - and awakened their Latin American side. But thats the same of almost any ethnic group in NY. There is china town, little italy, etc etc etc. There are a bunch of places in and around the city that are almost exclusive to certain groups. Mostly because they are/were immigrants and are adjusting. I do greet other Hispanics in Spanish. Its a usual thing more in states with a lot of hispanics. I guess a lot of hispanics thought you were hispanic! It wasn't meant to offend thy just made a mistake.I  So anyway just smile and tell them what you are. When they realize they usually say sorry or smile to apologize and just move on.
