Is it ok if a white person is talking about black people and says blacks instead of African Americans?

In class today a teacher was talking about race and she said African Americans but then when she started about Americans she said whites.

I think she should be able to say blacks.

You?

Yeahh white people always get crap about being racist but they call us more shit than we call them!

You know how many white people I have heard that from on the internet? lol

You can't determine who calls who more shit. Openly racist/prejudice and non-openly racist/prejudice doesn't matter.

I lol at people who think all Africans are Negroes and that all Negroes are African (Especially when many haven't set foot in Africa in generations).

I'd say black not all black people are AFRICAN American. If I were say from a different race and people kept calling me african british when in fact I was from say the carribean I would get annoyed. Its like when people call all people from around the india area Pakistani.

the word blacks sounds really bad to me for some reason.

when people say african americans i feel like theyre trying too hard to not sound racist.

id prefer if you just said black or black people

Took the words right out of my mouth.

My boyfriend is Jamaican, and whenever I've heard somebody refer to him as "African American" I've had to put them in their place and let them know he's not "African American", he's "Jamaican". It's perfectly ok to say "Black" or "Blacks", even though it may not sound too PC.

I once referred to a customer I had as "the Chinese woman is order #4" and they all jumped down my throat! But it's like, why? If she's Chinese and a woman, she's a Chinese woman. It's not racist in the least.

I don't even know how this whole "let's round them all up as African Americans, Asians, Latinos, etc" came about. If somebody is of a particular race, it's fine to address them as their particular race. Period.

Given that Black makes a lot more sense than African American, I'd say go with "Black". There's nothing African about a lot of black people in America. Even the psychotic afrocentric ones.
