My brother's watching Pride on my mom's laptop. I'd seen it before, and my mother adores the movie.
I just watched the beginning part again because the volume was up.

Anyways, it really really bothers me to watch those kinds of movies. Like severely so.

I don't like it. It just makes me feel jaded, and angry.

Older American movies and movies made about the time period before the 1960s do tend to focus more on racism perpetrated by white males motivated uniiquel by raw hatred. Such movies are indeed disturbing but not entirely untruthful, particularly when depicting some of the resistance against integration. although I do agree they tend to dab too much into the stereotypical.

This does not mean we should avoid watching these movies. They certainly do teach us a lesson about many injustices and sufferings imposed on those who were seen as inferior, dangerous, foreign etc.

However, as Bud2400 correctly mentioned, it is time movies starting going beyond this focus on white racism and start seeing more general examples of racism transcending all races, ethnicities and countries.

The world is indeed very complex and not a pretty place. Understanding this through the medium of cinema is a good way to realize the destructive effects of prejudice and be moved to do something about it.

The thing that bugs me about movies on racism is that they'll usually portray the racism in a very stereotypical manner - by a white person (usually male) who simply hates (not just doesn't like, but actually hates) non-whites because they're different and he's insecure with himself.  They also tend to justify it over stupid reasons, essentially creating a strawman, where the anti-racist is always correct and morally perfect.  In my experience, it isn't that simple.

A few notable movies about racism don't follow this (like Crash, which shows racism coming from individuals of all races, not just whites, and emphasizes those peoples' individuality), but most seem to.

But it's a double standard, the hatred many harbor for racists is just as grotesque as racism itself.

then just say that or at least address her feelings in the topic rather than switching it to that man :/

It bothers me more that people are just incapable of being empathetic, and it still hasn't changed because people have no empathy for racists, when it's clear 90% of the time there's some other factor in their life that's damaging them so bad they resort to racism.

anyways I think I understand a bit

like when you said it's "real"

that's what bothers you

I'm not saying racism is acceptable, I'm saying the only way there can be progress through mediation, not hostility.

the fact that someone of a different race may have done something to make a racist racist doesn't mean that racist isn't still a dumbshit

You should probably avoid real life then.
I hardly ever faced racism irl, and it wouldn't bother me irl. It's just when it's related to older times.

why does it bother you? can you not handle a little racism?
I'm not really sure.
I think it's because it's real, like this sort of thing really happened before.

If someone was racist to me nowadays, I wouldn't give a fuck. But I think it's because of the level it used to be at before, and the suffering people used to go through.

I'm too...what's the word? Sensitive? To other peoples suffering and stuff. Like I can't watch the movie Radio because I know it's a true story and it's a sad story.
