The last thing is that, even though everyone has the equal opportunity to make their life a success, they may not be able to. Next up is the economy.  I know three people who still have a steady income that actually makes ends meet.  Most of my friends got laid off at the same time I did, and few have been able to find anything else more than a part time at a grocery store, and even those crap jobs are like pulling teeth to land now since employers can take their pick of thousands upon thousands of applicants within a weeks of putting out that "Help Wanted" sign.  I hear that matters are a bit worse in my area than some others, but from what I've seen, it isn't a whole hell of a lot better elsewhere in the US.  My "uncle" said the way things are now reminded him a lot of how matters were at the end of the Great Depression (he was 90). The health care system is pretty pathetic as well. Then of course there's the rampant ignorance and bigotry. And a more personal reason would be that I really want a fresh start somewhere with no danger of running into old ghosts and nothing to remind me of things best forgotten.
