This rant will take the form of a poll. How it works is simple: I ask a question, and poll for answers. LW members, being ignorant fucktards, will get the question wrong, thus proving the point of my intended rant without me having to bother to write out an explanation of yet another childishly-simple fact that nine out of ten people on here can't grasp.

The Question
Bob doesn't know if there is a God or not. From this we can infer that Bob is a(n)...

-edit-
Mere minutes in, and I have 57 votes, 83% of which are miserable fail. I proclaim my topic to be win.

-more editing-
This made me laugh so hard, and proved my point so perfectly, that it deserves inclusion in the OP.

people will continue to vote agnostic.
That's because Agnostic is the RIGHT ANSWER you cunt.

-EDITING-
Even after an explanation of why the correct answer is the correct answer the failsauce continues to pour down like mana from the sky. Glorious.

I didn't define the terms because the actual definitions stand.

Aside from being simplistic.

Agnosticism relates to whether or not knowledge of gods can be had, not weak atheism.

Main Entry:
1ag·nos·tic Listen to the pronunciation of 1agnostic
Pronunciation:
  \ag-ˈnäs-tik, əg-\
Function:
  noun
Etymology:
Greek agnōstos unknown, unknowable, from a- + gnōstos known, from gignōskein to know — more at know
Date:
  1869
1: a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and probably unknowable; broadly : one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god

That's weak atheism.

The main definition (which I have bolded) encompasses stances incompatible with weak atheism and refers solely to epistemology, not cosmology.

I have once again stumbled upon this thread. It's not my fault if you don't understand what I'm saying (if you understood it then you wouldn't have said that I didn't know what "ignorant" means).

Then please clarify yourself. You complain that we won't get anywhere with this debate, but I genuinely would like to reach an understanding. That will only happen if we go into our misunderstandings rather than merely complaining about them and moving on.

And, since it clearly has to be said twice, "I leave this pointless argument, because we could continue this quibble forever and never get anywhere. Have a nice day."

Why does it have to be said twice? Am I not allowed to respond to you once you say that, even though you keep posting in the topic?

Let's call it a draw and leave it at that

You want us to lie?!

I don't care if you think I'm being ignorant, or condradicting myself, or saying something stupid in this post. I just don't. Let's call it a draw and leave it at that - unless you find some odd pleasure in arguing with yourself. In which case go ahead.

In your first post you said, "Bob doesn't know if there is a God or not". That may or may not mean that he believes one can't know for sure if there is a god. Which means that either he is an agnostic, or he doesn't know if he's an agnostic, which by default would make him an agnostic in the slightly more obscure definition.

Incorrect. It is quite possible for Bob, given what we know of him, to believe that one can have absolute knowledge of whether or not there is a god. In this case Bob would not be an agnostic. As such, we cannot infer from the information that we have that Bob is an agnostic.

Try making a bit of sense; everything you said before your closing statement doesn't prove that agnostics are either atheists or theists.

I'm sorry; I'm probably just not being clear with my points which is why I come off as making no sense. I'll try to explain it a different way. There are two questions. Each question requires a "yes" or "no" response, and groups you into one of two categories.

1) Can we know whether or not their is a god?
Yes: Gnostic (rarely termed as such)
No: Agnostic

2) Do you believe in god?
Yes: Theist
No: Atheist

You can see how every gnostic is an atheist or theist, and every atheist and theist is either gnostic or agnostic, because they are two different categories.

But at page 5 of this useless topic you are still no closer to proving that "all LW members are ignorant fucks" - all you've proven is that if you make a statement that people don't agree with, then they will argue against it.

I thought that by now it would be clear that that was the point.

Just because other people think differently from you doesn't make them ignorant.

I've never said anything of the sort.

It makes you ignorant.

Are you sure you know what that word means?

The problem wilder, is that you didn't define atheism properly.

There is hard atheism and soft atheism. Agnosticism is generally associated with soft atheism, where hard is a solid rejection in a belief in a higher power.

Since Bob doesn't know but has not stated a rejection of a belief in a higher power, he must be an agnostic.

I didn't define the terms because the actual definitions stand. Agnosticism relates to whether or not knowledge of gods can be had, not weak atheism. One can be a weak atheist and not an agnostic, for exmple, by saying "I'm unsure, but I do think that it's possible to know." We know that Bob doesn't believe in god, and is thus a weak atheist. We do not know whether or not Bob believes knowledge of gods existence is possible either way, and thus we cannot say whether or not he is agnostic.

Atheist: One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods

Agnostic: One who is skeptical about the existence of God BUT DOES NOT PROFESS TRUE ATHEISM.

Bob neither believes nor denies the existence of god. Therefore he is agnostic. He is agnostic, and therefore not atheist. Have you considered that maybe, just maybe, the majority is right this one time?

That would be right if those were actually the definitions of those words.

Those ARE the definitions. Google it then click on "definition". Don't assume you're right when you haven't even checked.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnosticism

Agnosticism (Greek: α- a-, without + γνώσις gnōsis, knowledge; after Gnosticism) is the philosophical view that the truth value of certain claims — particularly metaphysical claims regarding theology, afterlife or the existence of God, gods, deities, or even ultimate reality — is unknown or, depending on the form of agnosticism, inherently unknowable.

Agnosticism, in the theistic sense, signifies the belief that one cannot know for sure whether or not there is a god. All agnostics are etheir theists or atheists.

Try making a bit of sense; everything you said before your closing statement doesn't prove that agnostics are either atheists or theists. When looked at from a theological point of view, agnostics are put under a seperate category from theists and atheists for a reason.

But at page 5 of this useless topic you are still no closer to proving that "all LW members are ignorant fucks" - all you've proven is that if you make a statement that people don't agree with, then they will argue against it. Sometimes with stupid answers, and sometimes with a logical perspective. Just because other people think differently from you doesn't make them ignorant. It makes you ignorant. And with that, I leave this pointless argument, because we could continue this quibble forever and never get anywhere. Have a nice day.

the correct answer for him is "AN IGNORANT FUCK".

NEEDLESS TO SAY, at least i dont give head.

Maybe I should also add here that, in a broader sense, Bob is whatever Bob wants to be. There are people who don't pray, go to church, or live by any christian morals, but call themselves christian anyway. If Bob calls himself an agnostic, then even by your scrutinous (and flawed) standards, he is an agnostic.

The OP contains a link to one of my posts in this thread which explains why you are incorrect (though if LW allowed it I would probably have just quoted PoP's explanation and left it at that). I would recommend using said link.
