Actually it's not an arbitrary scale. The real IQ test is adjusted every yera so that 100 is always the average. And that 100 average is an arbitrary average, and depending on what test you take the author has arbitrarily used 15, 16, or 24 or some number for the SD (standard deviation). What I'm trying to say is that, not only are chess rankings self-standardizing, but they test your performance relative to others directly rather than indirectly.
