Ive never been to the US before and i'm not entirely sure what to go and visit. For anyone who has been, is there anything thats a 'must see'?
Thanks
Go to the Smithsonian museums in DC. I'd especially recommend the National Air and Space Museum and the National Musuem of American History (I think it's re-opened by now, but I'm not sure), and the National Museum of Natural History. Or, if you like art, there's the National Gallery of Art and the National Portrait Gallery. Go to the Capitol and the White House of course, and the Library of Congress. You could go to the Memorials as well. There's many scattered around the city. If you have time, go to Arlington Cemetery or take a tour of the Pentagon (by reservation only).
Other than the famous government-y places, DC is quite dull. It has a notoriously high crime rate and most of the city is one big slum.

That's great. We only had a day because we went on a bus that dropped us off sometime before lunch and then picked us back up around 10:00 or 11:00 I think. My Dad didn't want to drive it and we're not really all that close to any airports. That and we're from the country...half of us are happy there, half of us aspire to see something else, but none of us can navigate our way around the city.

Times Square has a million things in it. Empire State Building Central Park Statue of Liberty Ground Zero Tons of good food places, I really like Madame Tussauds..wax museum. I just went there, the picture of me and Eli Manning is from there. This is a really good list, similar to the one we had when we went a few years ago. Keep in mind though that it took us about 2 hours to get through the Empire State Building. And since we were there for just a day, most of that other stuff got left out. We saw Rockefeller Center too but I think that's about it. But when you said you wanted to see NY, you did mean NYC right? EDIT: Oh yeah, and Times Square, we that too and it was awesome.
