I've finally decided that I really need to start driving and get my license. I wanted to try and get it before the summer class I'm taking ends (I can't though because the first available appointment where I live is a week after), and the class ends in 6 weeks. So, I scheduled a test for August 10th, the second available appointment since it was a morning one and I usually work in the afternoon not the morning. Is that enough time for me to practice? How long did it take you?

MaryLin - You don't need a car to get a license. Most people I know with licenses don't have cars...

I received my permit the day I turned old enough to get one, and I got my driver's license the day I could get one. I have been driving for four years now, I think. There was never "practice" for me, it was just driving. Perhaps driving for me was just natural.

Where's the "I never did" option? Not all people have cars.

Five years.

I was 16 when I got my permit, and I'll be 21 when I get my license. I just don't like to drive. *shrugs*

I realize I didn't put in 6-8,8-10 and 10-12 months...that was done on purpose.

By the way, I'm 18, I've had my permit for almost a year, and since I'm 18, there are no laws on how much I have to practice before I can take my test, the only requirement there is is that I take a 5 hour pre-licensing course which I did earlier this month.

Lets see here, when I turned 16 I got my permit. Then 1 month later I got my actual license.

So 1 month... yeah..

Your poll is faulty. It took me between 6 and 12 months between getting my Learners and getting my Restricted.

The Canadian system is much different.
In Ontario:
You get your G1 which is basically your permit which means you can't drive alone. You have that for either 8 months (with drivers ed) or a year (without drivers ed).

So basically I had 8 months of 'training' before taking my road test. However, I think I only did the training in the last 3 months prior to taking the test.

I had to wait something like seven months between the time I got my permit and my license because I wasn't 16 yet, and there was some kind of law where you had to have your permit for 6 months. I'm not sure what the individual state laws are, especially depending on how old you are, but you might want to double check that.

I didn't. The country I was living in at the time, I just bought my licence. There are no tests if you're drinking buddies with the constable there.

I'd say 1 month or less.
I had the mandatory driving in Driver's Ed. And here and there my mom would let me drive.

It only took me a matter of months. Possibly just 6. I did take professional driving lessons. I took four. They weere expensive but totally worth it. Now I drive my mother's sports car =]
BrittBee Posted at 8:50 pm on June 29, 2009
forced to have 6 months of practice...before you're allowed to take the test.
