It sounds kind of shady that you were trying to withhold that information, but I suppose that's your option to do so. Seems an awkward position to put yourself, and your employer, in though, when you just get hired and are nearly immediately trying to get maternity leave.

You're not legally required to tell your employer about any personal information about yourself or your family. Depends on the state in the US. In Maryland they do not have to provide a reason for termination.
It's not a state thing, that's a national thing. Any form of disrimination is illegal.
However, your company may have a probationary period, where during a set time(At my work it's 3 months) they can fire you without giving you a reason, but after that they must have a valid reason. Although you may not be getting any money during your mat. leave because you will not have been working there very long.
