What does it exactly mean when a couple goes on a "break"?
Are they breaking up? Or is it just a couple days of alone time?

It means their bored of each other and want to sleep around with no strings attached only to realize later the slut lifestyle is not for them so they return to the relationship with a new outlook on life and AIDS.

my thoughts exactly just a bit more clever

They said they need time alone, but when you cut out all the bullshitting, it's a break up.

and a break that last a few days is rare. They usually last months, which translates into "break up".

well, with my ex, i asked for a break meaning a couple of days of alone time, and when i went to find him the next day during break, he was dating one of my good friends, and that broke my heart, but im over it now. i think it just depends really

It's the intent to just take a short break from each other.  No real obligations to see each other or for some call each other boyfriend/girlfriend.  However, it almost always turns into a real break-up.

Sometimes it's a pussy version of breaking up and sometimes it's just alone time.

It means the person who wants a break is getting tired of the other person.
