Ok so my bf is 20 and I'm 16, this is totally legal in the state of NC which I where we live, however he is in the army, an the age of concent is 18. So if they found out he could get kicked out and probably go to jail and ruin his whole future, I really like him and I don't want him to ruin his life over me. It's not worth it, so should I break up with him or why should I do?

P.S. my parents think he's 18

DO NOT BREAK UP WITH HIM ESPECIALLY OVER THIS

Have sex with him.  Whatever.  A rule like that is stupid and ridiculous and discriminatory, and it should be broken as much as possible.

So it'd also be okay for a 20 year old to have sex with a 15 year old? 14? 13? 12? 11?

You have to draw the line somewhere. The line just so happens to be 18, otherwise you'd have people arguing that if a few days before 18 is okay, then so should a week or two, then so should a month, etc.

Also yes, teenagers are stupid. I don't think anyone in their early to mid 20s (or later) will look back on everything they did from age 14-16 and think "Man I totally had all my shit together and knew exactly what I was doing." Usually it's something more along the lines of "How the fuck am I still alive?"

OP, you're 16. I'm not going to comment on your intelligence, but it's totally possible to not have a boyfriend and still be happy. You can say what you want about how stupid you think the law is... but it's the law. Driving 50 mph in a 30 mph zone, regardless of how open the road may be, is asking for a ticket. Blatantly defying a law is not the way to challenge it, because you're completely in the wrong.

You're totally missing the point that in the state where she lives, sex with her bf would be totally legal.  The problem is the conflict with the military jurisdiction to which her bf is subject.  SHE would not be defying the law, he would.  This has nothing to do with her maturity/intelligence in making a decision about having sex.

Their advice IS legit. You want to ruin the life of a soldier who is potentially going to risk his life for his country so you can have the freedom to have a dude fuck your horny ass. Despicable. Absolutely despicable.

What's despicable, absolutely despicable is your analysis of the matter.  Remember her BF, the 20 year old?  He has a say in this matter too, right?  He has complete control of not jepordizing his future.

That the OP is considering taking on the concern of his future at the expense of her own happiness shows her level of integrity and genuine caring for this person.

While I agree to an extent that there has been a LOT of wussification of the younger generation, I don't think that's any reason to abolish laws. Maturity comes with age. We don't give driver's licenses to 10-year-olds because they're kids. KIDS.

You think we should let kids discover on their own that the sign telling you to keep out of an electrical substation is there for a reason?

FUCK THE MAN. Let's just not have fences around them. Let little kids find out the hard way what 34.5 kV, or maybe even 765 kV if they're lucky, feels like. Let them play in electrified rail yards, because those signs warning that you might get fried is just for the man to use his heavy hand against the peasants.

Let middle aged guys have sex with 11-year-olds. Why should there be any penalties for that?

MODS: Gratuitous insults and name calling have no place in a reasonable discussion. If it were for editorial impact or the shock value of getting a point across it might be acceptable, but the above poster is being offensive for no detectable reason.

Yes, I do.  Age is an unfair thing to use to draw the line.  I say let them discover sex on their own (most people don't give kids credit) and let them have sex once it becomes interesting to them.  Then you give them the safe sex talk.

Many relationships with age gaps like that work out fine; contrary to popular belief not all older guys are perverts.  What happened to older meaning more mature?  You people, always assuming the negative.

Young people can often be stupid, yes.  That's how people learn.  This whole fucking society has become sissyfied.  You're 16 years old.  You are old enough to choose for yourself.  Don't listen to that piece of trash that posted above me.  My belief in this is unwavering and I'm going to defend democracy even when it doesn't seem worth defending.

Blatantly defying a law is not the way to challenge it, because you're completely in the wrong.

I disagree.  I blatantly defy the law much as I can.  I'm not completely in the wrong.  You're the one advocating that the government treating one group of people different from another based on something you can't control.  You're one step away from being Hitler.

Eat my shit, cunt.  Not one talks to ME like that, you stupid punk.  Take a walk, kid.

If that sentiment were true she would not be having this dilemma.

Really, do what you want.  No one's going to even find out anyway.  Are you just looking for a reason to dump someone you're bored with?

It's a four-year age difference.  Big deal.  All "laws" relating to age and relationships are complete horseshit to me and I use every chance I get to rub it in the government's face.

Don't listen to anyone else in this thread, they're just under the influence of Western brainwashing for now.  They're going to tell you that "well, age gaps become less significant as one grows older, so a 30-year-old and a 40-year-old would click better than a 16-year-old would with a 20-year-old."

You're 16 years old, you have a mind of your own, you know it and I know it.  Now, everyone else would say some horseshit about 16-year-old girls are all stupid and don't know any better, mostly because they've been conditioned to follow Western sex-obsessed morality.  Most of the other people who replied, the people whose opinions you should ignore, are over sixteen, but not by much, because they still think ALL older guys ONLY want sex from younger girls and that there's no possible way that the relationship would bring stability to your life.

What do I think?  I think you should think for yourself; make up your own mind.  The others' opinions are not important, as they are mostly bullshit.

Say fuck the "law" and let your mind be free!
