We've been talking over e-mail, but whenever we see each other in school we both sort of look away embarrassed. What to do?

You're most likely both shy so neither of you wants to make the first move - that's natural. Just stop him in the hall and say "Hi". Sure, it might be awkward at first, but if you don't try talking to him, you'll never get anywhere.
