Don't hold yourself back. Put your personality out there. Be friendly and open to all possibilities of new people and friendships. If you can't think of anything to say, ask questions about the other person, or compliment them. If it still seems really awkward, it could be that you two just don't have a connection, and aren't meant to be friends. Move on to the next person. To use a cliché, there are more fish in the sea!
As for your current friends, it's good that you can notice that you're beginning to lose them. But hold tight! You still haven't completely broken off contact from them, and you still have a chance to save your friendships. Don't be afraid to be make the first move by texting them and asking if they want to have lunch or come over. Write them a message on Facebook saying you haven't met up in a while, and you'd like to see them soon. Don't let them slip away just yet! The effort has to come from you, and although it may seem hard to make the first move, your friends will thank you for it.
be yourself :)
