I met a man a few months ago (on the internet).  He is from Egypt, 22, a college student.  I am 17, from the U.S., finishing high school this year.  I love this man more than anything.  We have been engaged for a couple months, but my parents don't approve.  We are both muslim, and do not believe in delaying marriages.  I'm sure that I want to marry this man - I trust him more than anyone.  We did plan to marry after I graduated, but I do not want to wait another half year.  I plan to go in December, over christmas break, WITHOUT my parents knowing.  I really don't want to come back either.

What can I do to make sure my parents don't find us?  Is it possible to just "disappear"?  My mother took my passport - I have the lost passport card - can I apply for a new one without her signature?

She just took away my internet completely, and says it is for my safety.  She thinks muslims are dangerous and that I should even hang out with my muslim friends here.  I feel trapped and I need my freedom - I make my own decisions now, I am physically and emotionally an adult.  I've thought through this decision thoroughly, and I know that if for any reason this does not work, I have a way out (I have a friend in Egypt).

So how do I keep this secret?  What is the best plan?  I need help, not advice on whether this is safe or right or not.  Thank you.  Alslam alykom.

Okay, I'll bite.

No you cannot get a new passport without a your mothers signature. You could get a fake passport if you wish but they are expensive and hard to come by. If you get caught with one the penatly is 110000$ and 10 years in jail.

Plus as a minor when they do find you, since a missing child is a federal case which gives them access to everything including this very hardrive you are a minor and they will bring you home.

for the posters asking what you know about Islam, I somewhat agree. Despite Sharia's claims about equality of the sexes in a court of law a woman is considered half of a man. Husbands have the right to beat their wives. Women are constantly considered in need of protection from their husbands. They cannot choose their own husband, to travel freely or to choose their own clothes. Sharia and Western laws are combined in Egypt. I'm not saying you don't know this just that you can't say he will not be a controling, traditional husband without knowing him.

Oh man, I can't even tell if this post is really serious or not. You're 17, no matter how much you think you're emotionally an adult, you're not. There is no way this is going to work out well, THINK about what you're doing. Talk to someone, get a therapist, understand that wanting to do this is not healthy and will most likely ruin your life. Would it hurt to put this on the back burner for a bit until you're able to talk to someone? Getting an outsiders opinion about this whole thing would be a great idea before going through with it.

Yeah, kill the non-believers! KILL!

edit: Uh, Mods, that was meant in jest. I wouldn't dream of inciting someone to murder.

The man I love and my religion are non-negotiable.  Involving these, my parents' options do not matter to me.
SpM Posted at 5:17 pm on Nov. 30, 2008
Aren't Muslims meant to respect their parents, not lie to them and subvert their authority?

You have never met this man before and he's in Egypt? Why would you even put yourself in that situation? You haven't even known him for more than a year!
