It's kind of a long story but basically my friend is going on a camping trip on the weekend of her birthday. It's the weekend of the 18th and 19th and she told me of her plans on Monday afternoon and asked me to go. I told her the chances of me getting a whole weekend off from work were slim to none. She then told me not to worry about getting Friday off because she works until 4 and I figured she knew I worked 5:30-9:00 on Fridays since I've worked that shift for nearly a year now.

So I went and talked to my boss on Tuesday and got him to let me take Saturday and Sunday off. I got my schedule tonight and I texted my friend to let her know I definitely got the weekend. She then asked me about Friday and was pissed that I had to work till closing even though she had said not to worry about Friday.

Now I have to go in tomorrow and ask the girl we just hired who is already most likely the one working Saturday and Sunday for me if she'd be willing to trade the day afternoon shift for the night shift with me. I feel kind of awkward asking her because I don't really know her she started about a week ago and I've never worked with her.

I'm just kind of pissed at my friend for being mad at me and nervous about asking this new girl to help me out especially because I've got all kinds of social anxieties especially when it comes to people I don't really know.

Do you guys have any suggestions of the best way to ask this girl to cover for me?

I would be kind of pissed too if a friend of mine was mad at me for something kind of dumb and their fault anyways.

Don't worry so much about asking the other girl to take your shift - just briefly explain the situation and ask whether she'd mind switching shifts. Something like this would work:
"Hey, I'm really in a fix, do you think you could help me out? It's my friend's birthday and she wants me to go camping with her on Friday, but I've got a close shift. Do you mind switching shifts with me?"

Keep it nice and simple, worst she can say is no.
