So I was doing rounds with the RAs the last week of school. I saw a boy and girl (who are dating) go upstairs to their rooms while we were in the lobby. I know who each of their roommates are. When we did rounds, it was about 1 AM in the morning. We passed the girl's room and there were a lot of people in there talking and hanging out, with the room half open. But when we got to the guy's room, the door was shut. And his roommate was actually sitting down in the middle of the hallway studying with another girl. They were just sitting on the floor really late at night.... We were gonna yell at him to move, but they let it go (fire hazard) Do you think that is a sign that the "boy" was getting it on in their room???

Maybe? Who cares?

I don't think you can tell from that. Sure it's possible, but why does it matter? If he's getting laid good on him.

Well, some of the dorms...you're not supposed to have a member of the opposite sex over, past a certain time. Or for the night. Which I think is dumb, especially when you live in coed floors, meaning...guys and girls share the floor. Not rooms, but the level. My dorm's rule is no member of the opposite sex past 1 a.m., nor are they allowed to stay over. My one roommate doesn't care, so, we let that rule 'slide'. It's mostly to protect the roommate(s). I have my own room. Lock off. What I do in my room is no one's business but mine. If an RA passes by, and suspects, or hears noise, though, by rule, they can report it. Stupidly.

-- Posted by Event Horizon at 4:30 pm on June 29, 2008
my school didn't care at all about that... we could have people pretty much permanently stay if we wanted to and no one would have said anything...

"it was about 1 AM in the morning." That made me laugh a little.
-- Posted by Vintorez at 4:44 pm on June 29, 2008
or he could have been sleeping and the roommate needed to study and didn't want to bother him

-- Posted by OverTheAir at 4:47 pm on June 29, 2008
Maybe and if so who cares? You're in college, this happens all the time. AND what kinda RA won't let kids sit in the hallway lol, sad.

If it's in the lease, then, yes, you do have to report that stuff.

Our RA/CA's. It's loitering, and that's breaking a contract/part of the lease. We're not even supposed to leave our doors open, and stuff.

Who cares. If they were, good for them. If it wasn't, fine. Even with college regulations, the students are still adults. If they can't act in adult ways than what's the civil liberty of being able to have sex? As for you, you should grow a set and break the rules yourself.

A lease is a leaes is a lease. You break it, you're breaking the contract, and you can get thrown out, legally.

Only by dickhole RA's and kids that think like the OP.

When you sign a lease/contract, you're expected to follow it, no ifs, ands, or buts. Now, I'n not saying I follow the rules. I have my guy stay over, and it's well past 1 a.m. when he leaves, if he does. But, if I get caught, I know I've violated the rules. The RA's HAVE to look for things like this. It's in their contract of work. They don't want a pink slip, just as much as you and I don't want one.

The level of oversight in the RA department is virtually null. Unless there is an event that surfaces with clear evidence of the RA's knowledge prior/and/or during the act, nothing can/will happen to them. Most RA's understand that it is freshman year [or whatever year one is in] and students are getting adjusted to their new freedom, as well as acting like college students all around. I am not saying that RA's should not do their job, but there is a bit of discretion that is pretty much taken as a given when you get that position. You want to maintain order and keep a safe environment according to the rules, but you also want to respect the rights of the residents and act in a mature/understanding way.

But if an RA SUSPECTS, they are, bound by contract, obliged to make an investigation out of it.
Most RA's understand that it is freshman year [or whatever year one is in] and students are getting adjusted to their new freedom, as well as acting like college students all around.
As an RA, they must accept their job. They've signed the contract. They have no say around it.

You want to maintain order and keep a safe environment according to the rules, but you also want to respect the rights of the residents and act in a mature/understanding way.
What the job contract states, as the lease contract, sits firm, and is pretty much set in stone. Discretion is really not an acceptable aspect in an RA's job. The rules come before the students, any day, and every day. You act upon the rules. That is your job as an RA. You're not their friends. You're their landlord, or at least, the landlord's assistant.
