I apologize for continuing the tradition of Christianity vs. Islam that seems to be so prevalent in this forum, but I have been wondering this for a while. Does the modern Christian see Islam as a threat to the security of Christianity in the world? I have talked to many people who call themselves Christians and I have also seen the posts of people in this forum (granted these people are generally idiots who think they are on an Internet crusade), and it seems that a lot of these Christians hold a very low opinion of Islam, many going as far as demonizing the religion. I realize that Christianity, as a whole, is very exclusivist in terms of the doctrine of salvation, but it seems like I see more Christians bashing Islam than other religions.

Yes, because American Christians don't understand either Christianity or Islam and only see actual Muslims on the news as being terrorists or "extremists."

I don't.

Well, I couldn't tell you, because I'm an Atheist, but why would Christians see Islamic as a thread? They're two separate religions, Islam, if I remember correctly..has nothing in common with Christianity? I'm probably wrong, but I'm just confused.

all religions see other religions as threats pretty much

I've not experienced that, at least not here. I imagine that in parts of the world where Islam is a greater demographic than in the American South, it might be the case (though you don't live far from me). To me, the biggest "threat" - that is what most Christians are aggressive toward - is atheism.

Well, Islam is experiencing a population surge right now and studies show that Islam could very well surpass Christianity to become the world's most practiced religion in the very near future.

to be religious surely you must have faith and unbridaled belief in your religion and must therefore believe it to be true and right... surely that would mean that they do not see any other religion or belief as a threat if they truely think they are right.
-- Posted by victoria4951ct at 7:36 pm on July 5, 2008
No I don't really see them as a threat. They can believe what they want to believe in! They will realize it at the end of time though...

Only if they want to blow us up.
-- Posted by exceedinglyrare at 5:10 am on July 6, 2008
Why would they/we? Religion isn't a competition to see who can have the most followers, and whether Christianity is true, Islam is true, or something else entirely is true, that faith will be true no matter how many people believe it.

Sure we do; we just never see it practiced.

American Christians bury their heads in the sand and are only able to regurgitate what their pastor and people on TV have told them about their own religion. Most are not aware of the historical context of Christianity and rarely read the Bible on their own. When they do, they don't read for understanding, but as a religious exercise.

Ignorant blanket statement is ignorant.

And you've talked to enough of them that your poll is accurate to how many percentage points? Or is this a regurgitation of something someone told you? Or, is this just how you, as a Christian, are and you are applying it across the board to all?

JeanClaude, way to generalize. As a Catholic, I give all religions the highest amount of respect. In terms of Islam, I think Muslims know more about us than we know about them. Two of my very good friends happen to be Muslim and they are definitely not 'terrorists'. I think Islam is a misunderstood religion and the whole 'all Muslims are terrorists' is very overstated.

I'm just saying, is all. It's not going to do you any good to shoot the messenger. If you want to deny the fact that there is a Christian culture unique to the United States, as every country has its own religious culture, that's your business.

Of course there is a Christian culture unique to the US...problem is that what you described? Isn't it.
