For all the bitching that African Americans on this forum do regarding apartheid and slavery, I'm just curious as to how many have actually suffered through them.

Wow, some of the posters here must be downright ancient. I'd love to hear about the traumatic experiences they suffered under the whip of the white man.

It's funny how the very word "slavery" itself is broad enough to be used in such a manner.

-- Posted by mountain hare at 8:39 pm on July 5, 2008

I'm a slave to eating and shitting. Emancipate me!

-- Posted by nigeltheoutlaw at 10:52 pm on July 5, 2008

Slavery in America has been gone for a while (Still allowed to complain about it) and Apartheid was in South Africa, so it's unlikely that their are African-AMERICANS who suffered from it, though that is possible since Apartheid didn't end until '94. Officially.

I guess this don't apply to me, I'm not African American, I'm black but not African American.

would you mind naming the people that have?

The most recent account of slavery occured at a revolutionary period in technological development.

Slavery was abolished among the European powers about a hundred or so years ago and racial prejudice in correlation to slavery was largely present in society for a good amount of years afterward. In essence, it may take hundreds of years for us to totally forget about African slavery simply because we are now globally interconnected. Our children (us, for the most part) have picked up on the unjust nature and unfortunate pattern of racism within our society. Remnants of African slavery still resonate within American society today.

ANd P.S.

Apartheid is more recent and there are people who have lived through it. It was only abolished about 20 or so years ago. And it included Africans.

Not African-Americans.

Well, that just strengthens my argument.

Apartheid was only abolished recently and therefore it is a relevant catastrophe for which one has to vouch for.
