how would i go about doing this
i am going to do it myself because my friend offered but she uses a safety pin and she doesn't clean her needles
so yeah

-- Posted by RockerTori106 at 6:38 pm on July 6, 2008

Don't I know someone who does it with safety pins too, but either way, don't try it. Get it professionally done. It's not worth a bad ear infection.

-- Posted by PeterNeedsHelp at 6:38 pm on July 6, 2008

i wouldnt

-- Posted by velvettears123 at 6:39 pm on July 6, 2008

well here you can go to the hospital n get it done for free .... yay .... n its totally sterile

-- Posted by zuzzabee17 at 6:40 pm on July 6, 2008

i;d go out to get it down professionally
plus im just squimish at the thought of putting safety pins through my ears/skin

-- Posted by pujolsfan at 6:40 pm on July 6, 2008

why not just get it proffesionally done? i think at Clair's they do it for free with the purchase of a ring

-- Posted by Pebbles123 at 6:40 pm on July 6, 2008

I peirced my septum myself yet i cringe when people mention about self ear peircing. :/ I'll also add that i fucked up on it cos i peirced it to high.

Just get it done at the peircers.
Seriously, their'll probably end up wonky if you do it yourself.

-- Posted by uwastedmyheart at 6:40 pm on July 6, 2008

Easy. I used a safety pin and the wall.  Had to put my ear against the wall for it get through.

-- Posted by gorjaz25 at 6:40 pm on July 6, 2008

its like 5 bucks at a chemist just go there

-- Posted by the raven at 6:40 pm on July 6, 2008

You're an idiot if you plan to do this yourself, honestly.
If you aren't responsible enough to go to someone who knows what they are doing, then you don't deserve to be pierced, simple as that.

Piercing any part of your body without a hypodermic needle is dangerous, and just asking for an infection, minor or major. Places like Clairs and Piercing Pagoda are pieces of shit. They practice on fucking teddy bears for a couple of weeks, at best, for pete's sake. And people let them shove unsterile shit through their body, just because they claim to be professionals, though they really aren't.

don't use a safety pin it's the wrong kind of metal. Use a needle. or even a sharp earing.

steralize everything with rubbing alcohol. Ice it numb. then mark the spot you want it. then shove it thru and pierce it.

Rubbing alcohol does not sterilize metal.

i have piercings and i've done it before
i was jw if anyone had better ideas on how to do it

-- Posted by LostInTheClouds at 6:43 pm on July 6, 2008

I've pierced my ears by myself three times now, each one using a safety pin. They all turned out fine.

Good for you, it doesn't make you smart.
Any good piercer will tell you that. If you don't believe me, and think I'm just trying to be a bitch, then go ask one.
If you just want to try and be a badass, or are just cheap, and lazy, then keep shoving dirty needles through your skin, and see how long you can get away without getting a nasty infection. You think that shit can't kill you? You'd be dead wrong if you do.

ok. take a needle and serolize it. like burn the end of it with a lighter. and dip it in water to cool it. take a peice of ice and numb your ear and put 1/2 a potato behind your ear and push the needle through where you want the percing. remember to also have peroxide and put it on every day afterwords so it wont get infected. and also turn the earings three times a day to keep em from growing up with the rings in your ear.

my aunt did mine like this...thats how i know how to do it,,

This is also horrible advice. This is not how you sterilize a needle. An autoclave is how you sterilize a needle properly. And the only safe type of needle to use is a hypodermic needle.

This type of advice needs to be banned.

And? It is generally unhealthy advice. It is a very great way to give someone an infection. Self-piercing in general is.
Which is why telling someone how to do it should be banned anyway.

-- Posted by iimjustbadnews at 6:55 pm on July 6, 2008

it would be better to get a gaged needle, but if you must use a saftey pin, place it in boiling hot water for approx. 15 mins or
place it over a flame for about 5 mins then rinse it off with water then with rubbing alcohol make sure the earing you put in it is extremely clean, perferable brand new and also sterilized.

no infections are needed in piercings.

-- Posted by Brookie Chookie23 at 6:56 pm on July 6, 2008

Trust me, it is worth the $20 or so to get it done properly.

  • Your piercing could get infected, because even if you 'sterilise' it yourself, only an autoclave (a giant high temperature steamer thing that true professionals use) can guarantee your equipment will be properly sterilised.
  • Infection often leaves permanent scars and can cause your piercing to move, not to mention infections often smell bad, look really nasty and are pretty damn obvious in a place like your ear.
  • Cartilage (the stuff your ear is made of) is prone to infection because it has no blood vessels and relies on the surrounding tissue for nutrients.
  • You probably don't have the right jewellery or piercing equipment, which would decrease the chances of your piercing healing properly, or healing at all.

I recommend you read this and reconsider self-piercing.

no infections are needed in piercings.
No infections are 'needed' ever, full stop. But the fact is they do happen, even when the most hygienic practises are followed in the most careful manner. Why pierce yourself with the wrong equipment and inadequate sterilising when you can pay $20 and greatly reduce the risks of infection?

To the people saying they self-pierced and it turned out fine: That does not mean there wasn't a high risk involved. You could ask 100 people to jump off a cliff and one might survive. Does that mean they didn't take a risk?

Boiling water isn't good enough. There are plenty of kinds of harmful bacteria (you could probably find half of them in your home) which can survive boiling water.

    Exactly.
I cannot believe these people didn't learn these things in their science classes.
Then again, I also can't believe they don't have the basic knowledge to just look this shit up on their own in google, but that's just me.
I understand that I grew up in an environment where I was exposed to these things everyday for years and years, but these are basic things we learn when we're in middle school, aren't they?

You don't even know how many times? Did you have to end up taking it out that often?
That just goes to show how successful your attempts were.

I grew up in a tattoo shop. I learned, from one of the top piercers in my state, all about piercing. I guarantee, I know much more than you. And I can tell you right now, rubbing alcohol is not a sterilization tool for needles or jewelry. That is why you will never see a reputable piercer using alcohol pads to sterilize their jewelry or needles. And if you ever do, you should immediately report them to health officials so that they can be shut down, because they are probably going to spread something to their clients.

The OP is terrible advice. Next they're going to tell you to get wasted before getting a tattoo because then you won't feel so much pain.
