along with their location and gender...it's a mighty difference when u think ur talking to an 18 yr old and it's a 13 year old...which imo doesn't have any opinion @ that age

-- Posted by matt15 at 12:17 am on July 20, 2008

I agree.

I sorta agree, but I'm hesitant. I'm not sure why.

The pedos would go wild

I completely agree. I was just thinking about that earlier, haha. Age matters more than sexual orientation, to me. Maybe take out that part, and put in the age.

Different people can show you different perspectives.

Either way, while age can make a difference, I've never had a need to check it.  In most cases, people ask me my age first, and I often respond and then question back.  Otherwise, I don't usually need the age (unless it's the OP and age can make a huge difference).

As Deezy does with her gender, people can also lie about their age.

because its allowing people on the internet to know too much about your offhand.

yeah we do! jeez...... some 13 year olds can be mature and have good opinions also.

-- Posted by fedoragirl at 12:19 am on July 20, 2008

That would be nice.

Agreed.

It doesn't matter.

-- Posted by tragic romance at 12:19 am on July 20, 2008

Fer sure not. Age is but a number, proving nothing more than the days of your misery. It doesnt change what you've been through, you learn from personal experience, and I've had conversations with children who are a hell of a lot more opinionated than some of the people I talk to here.

-- Posted by El Manana at 12:19 am on July 20, 2008

Older members would just talk down to the younger ones.  It should be optional to display age, like sexual orientation.

-- Posted by Solitude at 12:20 am on July 20, 2008

I don;t really care

-- Posted by ang42490424 at 12:20 am on July 20, 2008

There's both a pro and con with it, but if you think so then I guess my vote would have to be neutral

-- Posted by baileysababy6 at 12:20 am on July 20, 2008

gender, i agree. it's like people posting annon. and idk if they're a guy or a girl. age, not so much. one, you can lie about it, so that still wouldn't help. and two, not that it's really a problem to tell how old you are, but some people don't want that a known fact. and as far as location, that shouldn't have to be on there at all. not everyone wants people to know where they're from.

HA! See, I'm not the only one who thinks you're creepy.

I don't know, I'm just opposed to the idea. It's personal information that a person may not wish to share, so should this ever be implemented I think it would definitely have to be optional (and not opt-out, but rather opt-in). Some people might also have set a fake DoB for whatever reason.

Then there's the problem that whist some members might  like the idea, it could bring others to make fun of them for their young age, or if they post a topic to ridicule them and judge them that is not answering their question, and could make them feel bad (or worse than they already do). The older members might also be more likely to receive abuse from others (this is LW don't forget all the pissy and naive members).

It might not be a bad idea to have an option to turn on the age in the personal area of your profile (below your star sign) but it would definitely have to be opt-in. Even then I'm just not too attracted to this idea. We have the option to show all sorts of personal information, and age is too far. There's no real reason why our age should be of any importance, if it is it can be included within the body if a topic. I haven't even addressed the idea of sexual predators, as that's pretty self-explanatory.
