New Moderator Ability: Reactivate Closed Accounts Dec. 20, 2007 at 6:57pm by davjs Moderators can now reactivate closed accounts in the event that a member accidentally closes his or her account and wishes to reopen it before the 7 day waiting period is up.
ok in the past week i've seen three people's accounts re-activated within a day of closing them. i thought that livezilla was implemented because somebody (if i remember rightly, peeta or one of his accounts) had some fucked-up script or something close his account without him knowing what was happening....not because people closed their accounts with full knowledge of it and a day later wanted to come back. these people all knew exactly what the fuck they were doing. they all knew that anything was possible to happen on the site after they left. they all typed in "I understand that I cannot undo this action (for 7 days)." how the fuck was it an accident on any of their parts? this means even worse attention-whoring. come on, the significance of closing an account has been diminished enough; are you really going to make it this much worse and just bend over to people like this?

This is weird...very weird...

yeah thats a pretty bad update

Maybe it's just for people who have had a bad day or something and are feeling really extreme about cutting all social outlets off. Though it's not like 7 days is really that long of a waiting period.

Closing accounts is pointless.
-- Posted by Relativity at 4:38 pm on July 22, 2008
Honestly you have to go through an entire process to close your account and even answer the question as to WHY you're closing it. Re-opening it for someone who went through this process is a complete joke. Furthermore, what's even more of a joke is hearing the persons plea to have this account re-opened. "I'M ADDICTED! I MADE A MISTAKE! OPEN IT AGAIN! PLZ PLZ PLZ!"

we're supposed to bitch about the site being too fascist, not not enough leeway is good for all involved

ok diego why/how?

There's been a discussion about this the past few days in the mod forum, people coming from both sides; Of how we should use this feature and treat situations. Personally I think it was a stupid feature and should never have been introduced.

I agree with Sam that it's a silly feature that we didn't want/need, and still don't want/need. It's basically down to moderator discretion. If someone wants their account reinstated a day after, a mod can say no if they want, but the next mod can say yes if they want.

i see, thanks. glad you guys have discussed it.

Ditto as well, though I see the reason why David has given it to us. I really think we shouldn't be using it fr whenever a member decides to change their mind, as some of you guys even said- there's seriously no way it can be "accidentally" close as there's a whole damn process for it.

Personally, I can understand why it exists, but, it should only be used in case something odd with the system happens.

Closing accounts with the time limit never really made much sense to me.

i swear there really was some legitimate "accident" like a few days before the ability was implemented...

I know. It happened to several members which is why david implemented it. I did say I understood it's original intentions but think it should only be used for those purposes, and not to be used whenever a member thinks it's time for them to come back.

I don't think any account should be reactivated unless some bug is preventing the member from doing so. I think that's the only circumstance in which we should open the account for them. Apparently, I'm more or less alone on that standpoint, because it's seen as punishing someone for closing their account. As far as I'm concerned they chose to close it, they should face the consequences. But there ya go.

because leeway creates an environment where people realize that the rules don't actually matter as much as the people and that as long as the people are good the rules can be bent

I believe someone tried to open there account more than seven days after they'd closed it, and couldn't, so David implemented the feature whereby we could reactivate it.

I do believe that's why we were given that power in the first place.

It is, which is why it's the only reason I would open an account.

David's actions never made much sense.
