The car you drive is in your Mom's/Dad's name. They decide to get pissy with you and demand that you begin to pay for your own car insurance...but they still own the car and can, really, do whatever they want with it -- restrict your usage of it, restrict where you can go, take it back, etc. Fair?

Well.... do they drive it too? Or is it just you driving it, but the title is in their name?

Don't have a car, and don't care. 1/3534 really

That's just what parents do.

not fair.

Unfortunately, parents don't always have to do what's "fair."

Its not your car. You are still going to need insurance. Get your own car, pay for your own insurance, then its all your decision.

Title transfer. If your parents are logical or fair-minded at all, they won't mind doing it.

I know but the question is whether it's fair or not.

Not if you pay for it.
-- Posted by okumsup at 6:15 pm on July 23, 2008
wait did they BUY the car, or did you buy it?
-- Posted by fizzle123 at 6:16 pm on July 23, 2008
do u own haklf and half? because if its just your name on the title then its your car. so you can do what you will with your car.

I didn't ask what to do, I asked if it's fair or not, of course it'd be easier to have one's own car but that's not the easiest thing to acquire.

They bought it, that's why it's in their name.

Nope, just their name.

True. It is fair though if you are under 18. Regardless of who pays for insurance, they still have financial liability. Now, if it was your car, and you payed for everything, it would be a little out of place for them to restrict you on it.

not fair

It's fair. They bought it and it's in their name. Driving your parents' car is a privilege not a right. It's theirs to offer.

that's fair.. thats more than fair, it's their car, they probably pay gas, they pay their own insurance, and your probably paying insurance as a 'temp driver' or what not..

It's fair. They are getting the short end of the stick here. You gotta wonder why they'd agree to something like that. Would you? I mean, why would you pay $100's a month for something just so someone else gets to use it. I wouldn't.. that's just a bad investment, don't you think? If I were you, I'd talk some sense into your parents and tell them to get rid of the money drain. Tell them to use that money to have a nice dinner out once a month or so. Now THAT would be fair.
