Oh fuck.
For anyone out there who has illegally downloaded music or movies, you may want to pay attention to this. The leaders of the G8, meeting this week, are seemingly ready to ratify an agreement that would allow customs agents to search your mobile devices (computer, phone, iPod, etc.) for illegally downloaded media content. The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (Acta) is considered a step toward stopping piracy, but the logistics of implementing a discretionary system for carrying out the agreement are mind boggling. Consider this: Half of the songs on the average teen's iPod are illegally downloaded. The biggest concern is that people who have downloaded media for personal use will be at risk of punishment, though no one knows exactly what the punishment would be. It has been reported however, that the European Parliament has suggested kicking offenders off the Internet. The scenario most likely to materialize is that only those with massive amounts of MP3 or movie content would be at risk. Whatever way the G8 rules, one has to wonder what difference it will make.

it better not happen I'm flying this weekend.. and EVERYTHING on my ipod is from Limewire..

That's incredibly intelligent. By making it the airports is does not violate any rights because you are not obligated to being the airport. So by making the choice you are subject to the legal search. Smart, but I think it's a bit far...

Do you know what Custom's officers are capable of? They don't need warrants. They don't have consequences. They get free reign. Basically, with them, you have no rights. FP

I've left Michigan 5 times in my 19 years of life. Whatev. *But that aside this is still completely ridiculous and a major infringement of our freedoms. I highly doubt this will go into effect.

dang, that sucks. I don't travel by airport. But the only thing with music from Limewire is in my cell. :(

I'm not exactly sure how they'd be able to know where the music came from.

If it lacks digital authenticity signatures, it's illegal. Also, those signatures are only on files legally downloaded from stores, like iTunes. So even copying your own, legally owned CD collection is illegal, since they lack the signatures. It's over the top, but to be fair, it's really the only way they can stop it. FP

That's exactly why they can't do anything about. Nothing illegal about put your own cds on your ipod. (Disclaimer: That I know of.)

Last I heard, any mp3 not legally bought from an online store cannot be legally transferred to an mp3 player, because it's a copy, not the originally purchased file. You didn't buy the mp3s. You bought the cda files. Also, this isn't ridiculous. It's hardly a change. Customs Officers already have unlimited power on the border. This won't change much for them. As for invasion of privacy, how is it different than random bag searches? It really isn't, but we've accepted that. FP

Even then, this won't succeed in stopping it, nothing will. We will just having increasingly draconian laws placed upon us in a vain attempt to stop something that cannot be stopped. Or, if it is eventually stopped, it will only be because many of us will be "criminals" and in jail, the price for stopping it will be far too high.

This doesn't even make sense Panther. How are they going to check the signatures on every type of Mp3 player and laptop much less phone? Not going to happen. It would cost BILLIONS to merely equip airports with the necessary adapters to check every time to cell phone and mp3 player. Furthermore, if I legally buy a song off Itunes, burn it to a CD and then rip it, I have stolen nothing.

Bullshit. I mean, you think they're going to gp through my mp3 player, which holds ~400 songs, to find one without a signature? How about one with 1000+ songs? 2000+? Even if they merely checked five songs for every device, it would take far too long, and cost far too much for the necessary equipment. And meh. If they do put this in effect, which I highly doubt they will, I'll just go "old school" for for the few trips I go on that thsi would be an issue, with legal CDs and a discman. ^.^

It wouldn't be hard if they took them, and sent them off to be examined. I'd recommend it, actually. FP

Ok, no, that wont happen. I can see them possibly (possibly) putting into effect, at least temporarily, something where they do it on the spot. But there's no way that they'll ever be able to TAKE people's music, which those people are bringing along for the trip, and not return it until some unspecified date. And you'd recommend what?

They are legally able to, so why not? Not bring computers and the like with you when crossing a border. FP
