Well, I got admitted to UC Irvine and it's not my ideal school. I got crazy and reapplied to another school, private, Mills College. Here's the pros and cons: **cons are (-) pros are (+) UCI: (-)Too close to home (-)Not liberal AT ALL (I like activism) (-)Homogeneous "diversity" (-)Too big of a school (-) professors seem to be more interested in their work than teaching (-)I grew up in the area (-)On their facebook, students don't seem academically interested (no offense) (-) ugly campus (+)I'll only pay $1,000 dollars a year to attend and that's including books, housing...everything Mills: (-) At least 10k in loans a year (-) bad administration (Financial aid office is MEAN) (-) only get to see home on vacations )': (-) won't take some of the AP credit I've taken (+)Very liberal (+)small school- I'll get to know teachers (+)In an area where I've never been before (+) I get to take classes at UC Berkeley ( : (+) Beautiful campus I'm so confused... I mean, COST VS. ACADEMICS? What would you pick?

Mills. Go where you truly want to go, or you'll regret it for the rest of your life.

Go mills, if you want to. Or apply to a third one.

It's more important to go where you want to go.

...what about the actual academics of the schools, the statistics about people who graduate after a certain amount of time and their ability to find jobs? You can't just base going to a school off of how liberal it is and what it looks like...that won't get you anywhere. Oh, and, I go to a very small college and you hardly get to know anyone on campus. Maybe that's just this one, since it's more of a commuter school, but you really don't get to know people there. I've hung around campus for hours with nothing to do in between classes and it was like a ghost town.

Mills, definitely. Go where you love.

I'd say that the academics could be comparable, but the thing is, I go to school to know the teachers and to learn for myself. I don't go to school to go to school, I do it to understand more and be a bit more self- fulfilled. I'm not sure if Mills is the right school for me, Most likely I'd transfer or so, but i think it's a better school for me than UCI is. Anyone have any experience with either Irvine or Mills?

Go to Mills, no question. Nothing is worth your happiness.

Learning for yourself is basically what college is. You think the professors REALLY care about your academics? Pshh, you're paying for your own education. I'd imagine most colleges are the same, where professors just go off of power-points and lecture you to death about nothing that's really important and expect you to go over the material yourself. If you're looking to be buddy-buddy with the teachers...good luck with that, and while that is a good thing sometimes since they might have connections somewhere in a field you're interested in, that's not really why you're there. I guess we just have different priorities, but you'd think you'd want to know just how successful you'll be with a degree from whatever school you go to. If you're trying to be a hugely self-directed learner, then you might as well go to the school that has the better name, and gives you more chances in the future since you'll be doing the same thing at either college.

Where to? Isn't it hard to transfer as a freshman?

If Mills is what you really WANT you should go there, but if you're considering transferring at some point, why not just go UC Irvine where it's MUCH cheaper? :-/
