well we need it now

What we need to do is get away from oil and use different energy sources that are environmentally friendly.  My Dad will be for him if he's for off shore drilling.

This is the second time I've heard Obama's position on energy and have been completely befuddled by the plans he hopes to use to enact new energy policies.

From OP's article:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Friday he would be willing to support limited additional offshore oil drilling if that's what it takes to enact a comprehensive policy to foster fuel-efficient autos and develop alternate energy sources.

If we increase offshore drilling, oil prices will drop, and the people's interest in alternative fuels will decline. Why would people want to spend more on an alternative source if oil is much cheaper again?

Mr. Obama seems to me to be forgetting the basics of supply and demand. As the supply increases, the price will drop and more people will have what they need for less.

And if you need an example of this happening before, look no further than the fuel crises of the 1970s. Even though it was a government failure that caused the actual shortages, it still did nothing to scare Americans into being more fuel responsible. Out of the 1970s, we saw the rise of the SUV and other gas-guzzlers.
