I have a cheapo laptop with Windows and it works just fine and Im totally pleased with it. But I see how sleek a Macbook is and... I really want one.

But thats just it. My cheapo laptop works ok for me. No viruses, it works quickly enough... and for my uses for it, its good. I just want a Mac cus look its cool.

Im going to college and Im thinking of whether I should stay loyal to my laptop or get a new Macbook.

So what do you all think? What can a Macbook do for me that Windows cant?

O and this is anon because I dont like being patronised like I was last time I asked something

No viruses. Mine has never been slow and needed to restart.
I hate Windows to the bone.

-- Posted by Love Today at 4:19 pm on Aug. 4, 2008

Macs can't get viruses.
Idk, they're just awesome and convenient.
Because you can make movies on imovie, make and record songs on garage band, and take sweet pictures on photobooth.

macs can get viruses, just as easily as windows machines can....the difference is nobody would write a virus to infect 10 people when they can write one to infect 10,000.

they have a two buttoned mouse, its just a slightly different design than the windows mouse, making it easier to misclick, but looking better.

in short,
macs look good
PC's are good, superior software compatibility, upgradable, familiar, compatible with your existing uni/collages network/software

I didn't say it was better. It's just different.

People who use mac and claim they got tons of viruses and computer crashes on windows didn't protect their system properly.

Opinions.

Yeah at my school they have macs and the mouses are really small so they will give you hand cramps... I never had to right click though I wonder what I would have done

You should make that a new thread but Im gonna say YES to that.

Cus like the only time Windows has ever been shitty with me was because I didnt do virus checks and I was just generally being careless with it.

My laptop crashed just once and it was because I was messing with the registry. Other than that my lap has been good to me. I dunno why people complain about Windows so much.

That doesnt mean they dont exist.

Safari in particular has several exploits.

And as it was said, who is going to waste their time targeting a smaller market share? The whole point of a virus is to get it to spread to as many people as possible. If you are targeting a smaller group of people, its not going to spread nearly as well.

Though it is correct that part of the reason the macitosh has less viruses is due to it's low user base, it also has a unix opperating system, which is much harder to write a virus for.

Actually, most devs find writing for unix based OSs easier.

However, a majority of devs are used to writing for Windows NT based platforms.

Besides, exploiting doesnt really involve writing a program, rather it involves writing for the kernal of a system, and since Unix systems are EXTREMELY (pretty much entirely) based on command systems, it allows alot more room for exploits.

I'm on my MacBook right now and what I like the most about it is what others have said...it doesn't get viruses and so far I haven't gotten spyware, either. I don't really know why but it's really convenient. My friend's dad is a certified professional in Windows and he said that most viruses that infect Windows "don't know what to do" when they reach a Mac system. I don't know if that's true, do with it what you will, but I love my Mac. I recommend it.

-- Posted by mysticgohan at 4:05 pm on Aug. 12, 2008

Macs can get viruses but no ones going to waste time making one for, what is it, an 8% market share?

Stick with your laptop if you don't need to upgrade and look at new Windows based systems and macs if you do need to upgrade. Getting your money's worth is better then getting something that looks cool in my book.

-- Posted by allsmiles at 5:53 am on Aug. 13, 2008

Don't bother upgrading. The expenditure's way too much, especially if you're off to college.

-- Posted by pleaseremove at 3:25 pm on Aug. 13, 2008

In short there is nothing they can do any better. They work fairly differently. Others would argue they are easier to use etc, however no system however easy it is to use on any scale is going to be as easy to use as the system you are already happy with. You miss out on a few bits of nice software, but really, nothing there isn't an application for in Windows which works just as well.

I will admit you don't have to think about viruses etc anywhere near as much (if at all) as others have pointed out. This may or may not change any time soon. Although if your happy with your Windows set-up (personally i have never had a virus issue) then why change.
