Some are just manifestations of what we've thought about during the day (and it's usually easy to tell which these are, because you can say to yourself, "Oh yes, I was thinking I wanted licorice today.  That must be why it's in the dream.") Some have actual meanings, and you can use a dream dictionary to look up the symbolism of certain details. Some might actually be warnings or premonitions.  It's too tough to figure out which these kind are unless you write down your dreams and, later on, if something happens, you can look back at your dreams and say, "Oh!  This dream was probably warning me of that."
