Probably because the skin is thicker there, and melanin which colours the skin is usually darker on thinner skin. Rough areas like elbows, soles of feet, palms, knees, etc have thicker skin therefore less melanin. -- Posted by xoxamyxox at 2:19 am on Aug. 7, 2008 I'm not sure if often wondered that myself.
