when they're dad has died? She's my best friend and I have no clue what to say to her. I don't want to sound fake or generic or anything. I left a message on her phone saying that if she needed to talk then she could call me. But mainly I've just been trying to give her space until she comes back to school.

No words.
Just hugs.

Oh wow...well just be there for her. Tell her your sorry for her loss and that you are there for her 200%, just basically be a friend and make sure she will be ok. Deaths are really hard to deal with, especially when it is someone very very close to you. And the best thing to have during these times are friends and family to support you while your down.

I would say " it is not possible for me to understand how you are feeling right now.  All I can say is that I am your friend and I am here for you and that I care and you can count on me for anything from going to a movie to help escape to just having someone to hang out with to help you deal with all that is happening.  You have people that care and are here for you."
