I'm taking an anti-psychotic called depakote. I don't drink very often, but I want to. I am wondering if any of you have mixed depakote (or similars) with alcohol and how you reacted? My meds just say it may increase side affects and I don't get any side affects because I take a low dose of 250mg.

I've always read to never mix alcohol and pills, no matter what the dosage of the pills is.

I wouldn't risk more than 2 light drinks whenever you drink for the first few months.

Depakote: (BTW, if you are ever given a prescription for Erythromycin, an antibiotic, from a doctor tell them you are on Depakote and *cannot* take this antibiotic...it could cause your Depakote levels to go too high). Drinking alcohol with this drug will increase the effects of the sedative properties of the drug. You could pass out. It will also depress your drive to *breathe* as well as your heart rate, not to mention other brain functions like concentration, so DO NOT attempt to drive!!!

Can you say central nervous system depression? Bad idea.

When combined, it can increase the CNS depressant effects of the two drugs. Just don't do anything like driving and don't drink too much, and you'll be fine.

Just have one standard drink (1 beer, 1 cooler, 1 shot of hard liquor or a small glass of wine) and wait half an hour. If you're still sober have another and wait another half hour etc. until you figure out how much your tolerance to alcohol has been lowered. You might get drunk off one drink!

You can drink small amounts and be okay on antipsychotics. That is straight from my doctor. Drinking more than that however will potentiate sedation and could be dangerous. BTW- Depakote is not an antipsychotic it is a anticonvulsant used as a mood stabilizer.
